Turn off the tap, Save the planet.
Problem:
Medellín shows low levels of awareness regarding water conservation. EPM, as the provider of this public service, is interested in ensuring that citizens recognize the consequences this waste will bring in the future. A person wastes 3,240 liters of water annually if they do not turn off the tap while washing their hands. The city's wastewater treatment plant generates an average of 60 kilograms of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) annually to clean and reoxygenate this amount of water, which is one of the main contributors to the greenhouse effect and global warming.
Solution:
In February, we placed a piece in high-traffic bathrooms around the city (shopping malls, metro stations, and restaurants). It consisted of a printed sticker placed on the sinks with an aerial view of the city, which also blocked the drain. In this way, when the tap was left open for a few seconds, the city would flood. The results were surprising; the awareness levels decreased significantly by 43% compared to the previous months. This reduced the CO2 production from 5 kilograms per person per month to 2.15 kilograms and the water waste from 270 liters to 116 liters during that month.
